Austin Wedding Professionals Distinctive Spotlight Article

Austin Weddings, Red Corral Ranch, Wimberley, Texas, Outdoor Weddings

Nestled in the hills west of Wimberley, the feeling of peace at James & Colleen Reeves’ Red Corral Ranch is undeniable. There is a light that shines from the center of this Hill Country oasis.

Heritage

Founded as a cattle ranch over a hundred years ago, the Red Corral Ranch has experienced an evolution over the past four decades to become a leader in the movement for holistic management of our wildlife resources and a beautiful sacred space for weddings, retreats and spiritual renewal.

The first permanent structure at Red Corral Ranch was built in 1934. The original ranch house, now known as The Limestone Lodge, was built out of native stone drawn directly from the land on the ranch. Built by German craftsman, the simple structure is filled with elegant and earthy details. Stalagmites and stalactites from a cave located beneath the lodge form the mantle centerpiece while the curving arches of the dining room windows peak out at the Pecan Bottom, where century old pecan trees embrace a stone fireplace and fire pit.

Heart

Colleen Reeves grew up Colleen McClatchy in a ranching family in West Texas. She attended Baylor University where she met and fell in love with James Reeves, a farmer’s son. The couple was married on June 10th 1956 at the First Baptist Church of Olney, TX.

Colleen and James Reeves purchased the stone home and acreage in 1969 as a weekend and vacation retreat for their growing family. As her sons grew up and moved on to start their own families, Colleen found herself drawn more and more to the seclusion and beauty of Red Corral Ranch. She longed for a way to share her lovely piece of Hill Country with others and to do something useful and important with this gift of such a special place.

In 1994, as part of her involvement in the PlanIt Texas Coalition, Colleen found a way to become a positive force in the growing conflicts between environmentalists and ranchers in the Hill Country. Red Corral Ranch became the test site for the model of a profitable working ranch that was also a leader in wildlife management by becoming a sanctuary for the endangered Golden Cheeked Warbler.

It wasn’t until several years later that the transformation to wedding venue began. In 1999 Colleen’s youngest son, Donald, spent four months hand building the 40 foot diameter Labyrinth, which was christened with the new year in 2000. Several years later, Donald got the Red Corral Ranch wedding business started on that very labyrinth, still a favorite ceremony site. He and his bride also hosted the first Big Red Barn reception.

Home

The Red Corral Ranch is now home to a healthy population of Golden Cheeked Warblers, who migrate from Mexico every spring to mate and raise their families. In perfect balance with this central role of the land, the Ranch is now also home to a full time destination wedding venue where couples can come to stay for a time surrounded by friends, family and the warm embrace of nature.

With bed and breakfast accommodations for up to 33 guests, multiple ceremony and receptions sites, and over a thousand acres of Hill Country wilderness to explore, The Red Corral Ranch is the ultimate destination wedding location.
